Masters Preview: The Beginning of Amen Corner

Well, if you’ve not checked out the HOLE-BY-HOLE FLYOVER at the Official Masters website, you’re missing out on an education in golf course topography. The embedded link I provided showcases the official start of Augusta National’s Amen Corner. The long, difficult 505-yard par4 11th, known as White Dogwood, is probably my personal favorite and provides a great example of just how demanding many of the tee shots are at Augusta National. There might not be a lot of thick US Open rough protecting the fairways, but there are slews of tall Georgia Pines standing ready to defend. Hitting the fairway is obviously the first challenge on this hole, but White Dogwood administers a 2-part test, with the overall grade being weighed most heavily on the approach into the green. Take note of just how contoured the fairway is as you get closer to the green, particularly a mere 25 yards from the front apron, as the mounds and slopes dare a player to attempt a run-up recovery shot from a potential pine straw lie from long range. Ben Hogan said of the par4 11th, “If my approach ever hits that green, it’s because I pulled it left.” It’s just one of 18 splendid holes on what is arguably the most demanding 2nd-shot golf course in the entire world.

Furthermore, checking out all of the holes via the flyover will reveal two things that are seldom captured in their true essence by a television camera lens during the telecast: the elevation changes from both the tees and greens, and the undulating fairways. The players this week will face a litany of challenging lies, most of them coming from the fairway itself. Given the notoriously challenging nature of Augusta National’s greens, how the players execute those uneven lies from the fairways this week will differentiate those who have good looks at birdies from those merely trying to 2-putt for par.

Checkout the flyover, it’s awesome.

PS – anyone know if the footage from the flyovers are actual footage, or are they virtual – i.e. computerized graphics? I honestly can’t tell.

Good Read on Rory McIlroy

Courtesy of Irish Central

“Last year’s Masters was definitely a defining moment for me. It could’ve been a crossroads in my career. I could’ve  done what I did on Sunday at Augusta and let it affect me and let it get to me, and maybe go into a slump, or get down or feel sorry for myself. But I had enough good people around me not to let that happen. It was a big crossroads for me in my career, and I was able to go down the right path and put things right by winning the next Major. All I wanted to do was put myself in that position again just to see if I could handle it better – and I proved to myself that I could.” ~ Rory McIlroy

He’s not afraid to talk to the sports writers, and speaks candidly. He’s got a boatload of confidence, but not so much that he comes across as arrogant and cocky. And the manner in which approaches the game mentally, as well as physically, is refreshing, exciting, and leaves you wanting for more.

There’s nothing to like about this kid, Rory McIlroy, and I do think that he’s a product of good people that he hangs around.

May we hope that fame and fortune doesn’t change him.

CBS Golf Producer Frank Chirkinian Passes Away

Sadly, “The Ayatollah” has left us for the big booth in the sky. Late Friday afternoon it was confirmed that Frank Chirkinian lost his battle with advanced-stage lung cancer, leaving behind countless memories as CBS’s curator of golf, most notably the Masters.

Click HERE to see the PGA Tour’s remembrance video honoring the legacy of Frank Chirkinian, and click HERE to read Randall Mell’s look back on the many contributions Chirkinian gave to TV audiences who enjoyed watching the game at home. Jim Nantz will be paying tribute to Chirkinian during the halftime show in the Kansas vs Missouri College Basketball game on Saturday. The game starts at noon EST.

Below are a few comments from some who knew him best.

Frank Chirkinian was a visionary in every sense of the word. He was an artist. The sport of golf was presented on television to generations of fans in innovative, imaginative and entertaining ways because of Frank. Our sport has lost a friend and a true pioneer.” – PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem

“In his 38 years with CBS Sports, Frank Chirkinian’s remarkable innovations and contributions have become the industry standard for the way we watch golf on television. Frank has left a legacy of excellence and creativity in golf broadcasting that will never be equaled and is a true Hall of Famer in all of sports television.” - Sean McManus, Chairman, CBS Sports

“He was a friend, a mentor and a father figure to me. I was blessed to have his guiding hand extended to me at the age of 26. I am comforted knowing, as long as there is golf being televised any where in the world; Frank Chirkinian lives.” - CBS Golf Analyst Jim Nance

“The golfing world lost a great ambassador to the game today in the passing of Frank Chirkinian. He did as much for the game as anyone who has ever been associated with golf. His legacy will live on forever.” - Lance Barrow, Coordinating Producer of Golf and the NFL on CBS Sports

RIP, Mr. Frank Chirkinian

Augusta National to Become Public!

Finally you can play there. The dress code has been relaxed…. you can wear jeans and a tee shirt, or you can play in your birthday suit for that matter. You don’t need a caddy, and you don’t even need to call ahead of time to book a starting time.

All you need is a PlayStation 3 or an Xbox 360.

This is great news for the avid golf video gamers amongst us, myself included. EA Sports just announced that Augusta National will be one of the courses in the soon-to-be-released version of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12!

While it is indeed good news, don’t you just love how forgiving the fine folk at Augusta National are? Why just 9 months ago Chairman Billy Payne took Tiger Woods to task in front on one of the games biggest stages, talking ’bout how shocked he was to learn that one of sports world’s greatest heroes had basically betrayed the trust of the people who looked up to him! Apparently things are all-good now. Apparently!

That aside, if you don’t have stock in EA Sports – you should probably consider it, at least for the short term anyway. I suspect that this will be one of the company’s biggest sellers ever. And rest assured that I will be placing my own order well in advance to get my copy when it hits the market! If you will now excuse me so I can go celebrate this great news with a nice tall glass of sweet iced tea and a double-decker Pimento Cheese sandwich!
